MEDFORD — Winter weather and a flat bicycle tire didn't stop Jimmy Roberts on his journey from his Ashland home to a Medford shelter where he was scheduled to volunteer for an overnight shift.
He locked up his bike at Ray's Food Place in Phoenix and walked nearly 5 miles to finish the trip.

Grants Pass' Kingston Connelly won the long jump at Wednesday's Southwest Conference dual meet against South Medford with a personal-best leap of 21 feet, 1 inch. The Cavemen defeated the Panthers 95-49 while the Cavers dominated South 108-36.

Five Grants Pass athletes won two events apiece in a team sweep over South Medford at a Southwest Conference track and field dual meet Wednesday at Russ Werner Field.
Ben Antley won the short sprints, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.05 seconds and the 200 in 22.47.
Bronx Ely swept the hurdles races, finishing the 110 in 15.88 and the 300 in 41.18.
Kingston Connelly also won the long jump for the Cavemen with a personal-best 21 feet, 1 inch.

Two residences were damaged by fire in Grants Pass, one Wednesday afternoon and another in the wee hours this morning.
At 5:19 p.m. on Wednesday, firefighters responded to a structure fire at 228 N.E. B St. caused, according to neighbors, by an unattended fire in an outdoor pit that spread into the house.
Neighbors responded with garden hoses before firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire, which burned the siding and spread to the roof of a back room.
