Based in Jeffersonville, Ind., American Commercial Lines operates barges in North America, primarily along the Mississippi River in the U.S. The company is also the second-largest producer of dry-cargo barges in the U.S. through its Jeffboat subsidiary. In 2008, ACL shipped nearly 40 million ton-miles of cargo, principally dry-bulk freight, such as grain and coal, as well as liquid-chemical freight. The company operates more than 2,500 barges.
