Kroger is the largest retail grocery chain in the United States, with a little less than 2,500 supermarkets and multidepartment stores in 31 states, close to 800 convenience stores, 400 jewelry stores, and 40 food-processing plants. Supermarkets are generally operated as combination food and drug stores, multidepartment stores, or warehouse stores. The food-processing plants manufacture 40% of Kroger's private-label products. Nearly 800 of the firm's stores have fuel centers.
