Albemarle is the leading manufacturer of bromine-based chemical products, such as flame retardants and drilling fluid. The company is also one of the largest producers of catalysts used by petroleum refiners, and is a major supplier of pharmaceutical ingredients such as ibuprofen, which is used in painkillers. Albemarle is based in Baton Rouge, La., and generated over 60% of its 2008 revenues overseas.
