New Orleans-based McMoRan Exploration is an oil and gas producer in and around the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in the early 1970s, the firm joined forces with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold in 1975 but was sold in 1994. McMoRan's mid-2007 acquisition of shallow-water Gulf of Mexico fields more than quadrupled prior oil and gas production.
