Verizon is the incumbent phone company serving about 30% of the U.S. population. The firm also owns a long-haul network that it uses to provide telecom services to businesses around the globe. Verizon Wireless, the firm's 55%-owned partnership with Vodafone, serves more than 80 million customers following the acquisition of Alltel in January 2009. Verizon spun off its directories unit, Idearc, in 2006 and its local operations in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont in 2008.
