Arch Coal is the nation's second-largest coal producer. Based in St. Louis, Arch provides coal for 6% of U.S. electricity generation. The company owns and operates mining facilities in the Appalachian region in West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky; the Powder River Basin in Wyoming; and the Western Bituminous Region in Colorado and Utah. In 2008, Arch sold about 138 million tons of coal.
