Patriot Coal operates 16 coal mining complexes, 13 located in West Virginia and three in western Kentucky. The firm has about 1.8 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves and in 2008 produced 28.5 million tons. Spun out of Peabody Energy in late 2007, the company is headquartered in St. Louis. The firm employs about 4,000 people.
