Robert Pittenger was born in Dallas and raised in Austin. He earned a bachelor's in political science and psychology from the University of Texas.
He moved to Charlotte, N.C., in 1985.
Pittenger owns a real estate investment company.
He served in the state Senate from 2003 to 2008. He made an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2008, losing to Walter Dalton.
Pittenger and his wife, Suzanne, have four children.
Robert Pittenger is seeking his first election to Congress. He previously served as a state senator.
He is campaigning in 2012 on the platform of fiscal accountability, advocating for a balanced budget and federal debt reduction. He favors deregulation on large and small businesses as a way to promote job growth.
He says that if elected he would vote to repeal the 2010 health care reform law. He is a member of the National Rife Association and is a self-described "second amendment guy."
Pittenger is anti-abortion and is opposed to same-sex marriage.
