Profile

Martha Roby, born in 1976, is one of the younger members of Congress. She describes herself as a conservative Republican who favors immigration reform and smaller government.

In the November 2012 general election, she faces Democrat Therese Ford, an attorney and educator in Montgomery, for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District seat.

She is strongly anti-abortion and has voted for bills that would prevent taxpayer money from being used for abortions. In April 2011, she introduced legislation designed to stop federal funding for Planned Parenthood. In July 2012, she made a speech on the House floor supporting efforts to make abortions in the District of Columbia illegal after 20 weeks.

She is considered one of the most conservative members of Congress and scored an 84 percent on the American Conservative Union's scorecard of members of Congress.

She has voted against and promised to prevent defense spending cuts. A member of the Armed Services Committee, Roby has two major military bases in her district. She has voted for various extensions to military budgets.

Roby is also an opponent of government-sponsored health care. She has voted to repeal the 2010 federal health care bill supported by President Barack Obama. She also supported the Ryan Budget Bill, which would turn Medicare into a voucher system.

On the Montgomery City Council Roby led efforts to adopt an ordinance prohibiting city businesses from harboring illegal aliens. She also worked to establish a local sales tax holiday and to strengthen landlord-tenant laws.
