Profile

Ted Yoho, making his first run for political office, upset the Republican incumbent, U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns, in the August 2012 GOP primary race for Florida's 3rd Congressional District. He faces Democrat J.R. Gaillot in the November general election.

Yoho, a tea party supporter, won by slightly more than 800 votes — about 1 percentage point. Yoho, a veterinarian, was helped by new district boundaries, low voter turnout and a tactical decision by Stearns to emphasize his Washington experience.

Stearns had 16 times more cash on hand than Yoho — $2 million versus $129,000 — but Yoho was helped by an active grassroots campaign and the courting of party executives in the District's 13 central-north counties, which stretch from the Gulf Coast to suburban Jacksonville.

While Yoho had celebrity endorsers such as Lynyrd Skynyrd's Johnny Van Zant, his website emphasized the support of everyday voters, such as a grocery store meat cutter, a tile contractor and a shoe store manager.

He believes that the U.S. needs to be more energy independent and supports expanded drilling. "We need to drill here, drill now and drill responsibly. We must build the Keystone Pipeline and decrease regulations on energy companies to utilize our Nation's natural resources," Yoho says on his campaign website.

He is a strong supporter of the National Rifle Association and is anti-abortion. He opposes taxpayer funding of abortions.

Redistricting following the 2010 census changed the boundaries of Stearns' district and incorporated new constituents. Stearns' old 6th Congressional District stretched from metro Jacksonville through Gainesville and down into Lake County, a suburb of Orlando. The new district pushed further northwest, stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Florida-Georgia border and incorporated voters who were both more rural and had more experience working in agriculture than his previous district.
