Arnold Schwarzenegger was first elected governor in the 2003 recall election that ousted then-Gov. Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger won 49 percent of the vote in a field of 135 candidates. At the same time, voters recalled Davis by a 55 to 45 percent margin.

Schwarzenegger won re-election in 2006, beating Democratic challenger and former California Treasurer Phil Angelides, with a margin of 58.8 percent of the vote.

Barbara Boxer was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, defeating Republican Bruce Herschensohn with 48 percent of the vote. She was re-elected in 1998, defeating Republican Matt Fong with 53 percent of the vote. In 2004, she defeated Republican Bill Jones, winning 58 percent of the vote.

Boxer was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors in 1976.

She first won her congressional seat in 1982, and was re-elected in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990. She won her last election to the House with 68 percent of the vote.

Dianne Feinstein was first elected to the U.S. Senate in a 1992 special election, winning 54 percent of the vote. She was elected to a full term in 1994, defeating Republican Michael Huffington with 47 percent of the vote.

Feinstein held onto her seat in 2000, defeating Republican Tom Campbell with 56 percent.

She was re-elected in 2006 with 59 percent, attracting only token Republican opposition from conservative former state legislator Dick Mountjoy of Monrovia.

Feinstein was elected to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors in 1969 and re-elected in 1973 and 1977. She succeeded Mayor George Moscone as acting mayor following his assassination in 1978.

She was re-elected in 1979, defeated a recall movement in 1983 and was elected to a second term later in 1983.

She won the Democratic nomination for governor in 1990 but lost to Republican Pete Wilson.
