Evan Bayh was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998, defeating Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke, a Republican, with 63 percent of the vote. Bayh was easily re-elected in 2004 with 62 percent of the vote over Republican Marvin Scott. Bayh was elected Indiana's secretary of state in 1986. He was then elected governor in 1988, defeating Lt. Dick Lugar was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976, with 59 percent of the vote, ousting incumbent Democratic Sen. Vance Hartke. Lugar was re-elected in 1982, with 54 percent of the vote, defeating Democratic Rep. Floyd Fithian. In 1988, Lugar won 68 percent of the vote against Democrat Jack Wickes to set a record winning margin in an Indiana Senate race. He was re-elected in 1994 with 67 percent of the vote, defeating James Jontz. He won a fifth term in 2000, capturing 67 percent of the vote against Democrat David Johnson. Democrats did not field a candidate against him in 2006, when he defeated a Libertarian with about 87 percent of the vote. Lugar lost a 1974 race to then-U.S. Sen.
