Don Carcieri was elected governor in 2002, defeating three-time Democratic gubernatorial candidate Myrth York with 55 percent. Carcieri defeated Jim Bennett, former chairman of the state's Convention Center Authority, in the 2002 GOP gubernatorial primary with 67 percent of the vote. Jack Reed was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, defeating Republican Nancy Mayer with 63 percent of the vote for the seat being vacated by Sen. Claiborne Pell.
