City Council confirms Beck as LAPD chief

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Police Department has a new chief.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the City Council confirmed Charlie Beck as the department's next leader. The 32-year veteran has garnered considerable support from local officials and community leaders and his confirmation was widely expected.

Beck replaces William Bratton, who quit last month to take a job with a security consultancy firm in New York. Beck has said he wants to take the reforms introduced by Bratton and ensure these become part of the LAPD's permanent creed.

The department underwent a transformation under Bratton, who oversaw dropping crime rates and improved relations with communities long suspicious of the department.
