DA: Greeley officers justified in fatal shooting

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- Prosecutors have cleared three police officers who shot and killed a 21-year-old man at a Greeley home.

The Weld County District Attorney's Office said Monday the officers were justified in shooting Jacinto Zavala because the man pointed a long gun at one of them when they ordered him to raise his hands.

The Greeley Tribune reports ( http://bit.ly/1oesHD7 ) officers were responding Aug. 13 to a 911 caller who said Zavala was a former military member who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and was armed and drunk. Before officers arrived, Zavala told a dispatcher there was going to be a shootout.

District Attorney Ken Buck says the officers' actions were justified "because they reasonably believed it was necessary to defend themselves and others."

The rifle used by Zavala turned out to be a BB gun.
