Man ID'd in shooting involving Fruita officers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) -- Police say a man who was killed in a shooting involving Fruita police officers had fled after being pulled over on the highway, then emerged from a home pointing a gun at the officers.

Coroner's officials said Monday that 61-year-old Lewis Pollard had multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say he fled after officers pulled him over around 12:40 a.m. Saturday for an alleged traffic violation, and officers followed department policy in not pursuing him. The Daily Sentinel reports ( http://bit.ly/16Bg1PG ) that according to police, the officers later saw his vehicle outside a trailer and knocked. Police say Pollard exited the trailer pointing a gun at Sgt. Kevin Paquette and officers Andrew Courtney and Steve Lentz. The officers opened fire.

Authorities are investigating the shooting.
