Florida Class 7A Championship
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Alonzo Smith rushed for 219 yards and two touchdowns to lift Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer to a 55-39 victory over Niceville in the Florida Class 7A state football championship game Friday night.
Dwyer (15-0) earned its second state championship in four years.
Niceville (13-2) led 21-19 at halftime but Dwyer broke things open with 22 points in the third quarter. Johnnie Dixon hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Parr to give the Panthers a 34-27 lead.
The Panthers' Trace Batten returned an interception 27 yards to the Niceville 12 and five plays later Gerald Hearns scored from 1-yard out to make it 41-27.
Smith closed out the game with a 58-yard touchdown run that gave Dwyer a 55-33 lead in the fourth quarter.
Parr was 21-of-27 for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Niceville's Ashton Hooker was 15-of-26 for 245 yards and two touchdowns but threw five interceptions.
