Stocks closed broadly lower Friday, extending the market's modest losses from a day earlier. A slump in big technology stocks, consumer goods and health care companies weighed on the market. Banks eked out gains, getting a boost from rising bond yields.

On Friday:

The S&P 500 index fell 22.99 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,670.14.

The Dow Jones industrial average slid 201.95 points, or 0.8 percent, to 24,462.94.

The Nasdaq composite lost 91.93 points, or 1.3 percent, to 7,146.13.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks gave up 9.69 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,564.12.

For the week:

The S&P 500 is up 13.84 points, or 0.5 percent.

The Dow is up 102.80 points, or 0.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 39.48 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 14.61 points, or 0.9 percent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is down 3.47 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Dow is down 256.28 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 242.73 points, or 3.5 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 28.61 points, or 1.9 percent.
