Police: Man shot in ankle after fleeing Jacksonville cops

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Officials say police in Jacksonville shot a man in the ankle after responding to reports of an armed car theft.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that the shooting happened Wednesday morning outside of a La Quinta Inn. Officers found the stolen car around 3 a.m. but sat and waited for someone to approach it.

The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1Ofbo6O ) reports that a man and a woman arrived at the car around 10 a.m. The man fled after being confronted, and police say he had a black gun in his hand.

Officer Jason Lederman says he saw the man crouch down and reach for something in his waistband. Police say Lederman fired 3 shots, one of which hit the man's ankle.

Authorities did not immediately release the suspect's name.
