Hanabusa files to run in special House election

HONOLULU (AP) -- State Senate President Colleen Hanabusa has filed to run in a May 22 special election to fill a vacant congressional seat in Hawaii.

Hanabusa submitted her candidacy papers for the 1st Congressional District with the state Elections Office on Wednesday.

The election was called after the resignation of Neil Abercrombie, who is running for governor.

Hanabusa, a Democrat, will face at least two major rivals: Fellow Democrat Ed Case, who held Hawaii's 2nd District seat from 2003 through 2006, and Republican Honolulu Councilman Ed Djou.

Case has already filed his paperwork and Djou is expected to do so next week.

The all-mail election will be a winner-take-all affair to serve out the remainder of the current term, which ends early next year.
