Trial for mother and son postponed until October

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A Shawnee County judge has postponed the trial of a mother and son who are charged with killing the son's wife.

Manuela Alcala, of El Paso, Texas, and Manuel Alcala were scheduled to go to trial July 1 in the October 2012 death of 34-year-old Ashley Alcala at her home in Topeka. On Monday, a Shawnee County judge agreed to delay the trial until Oct. 7 because of new information from another suspect.

Two other men from El Paso - including another of Manuela Alcala's sons - are charged in the case. All four are charged with felony first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit felony first-degree murder.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/164NX73 ) defense attorneys did not indicate during the hearing which co-defendant provided the information.
