BEIRUT (AP) -- A group of Syrian nuns reportedly taken by rebels from a convent in a Christian village near Damascus have appeared in a video broadcast on Al-Jazeera.
In the video aired Friday, the nuns appeared healthy and took turns at speaking from an undisclosed location. The 13 nuns and three civilians said they left the Mar Takla convent in the village of Maaloula to escape heavy shelling.
They denied they were abducted and said they were being treated well by "brothers" who helped them escape the shelling of Maaloula.
Opposition activists said the nuns were taken by rebels and were being kept in the rebel held town of Yabroud.
The video could not be independently verified and it was unclear if the nuns were speaking under duress.
