Nebraska man found guilty in grandson's death

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) -- A Naponee man was convicted of killing his 2-year-old grandson who was found after he died to have suffered extensive injuries, including a fractured skull and other bones.

Peter Draper, 48, could face up to life in prison when he's sentenced Aug. 1 in Franklin County. He was convicted Friday in Adams County of intentional child abuse resulting in death and intentional child abuse resulting in serious injury. That part of the trial was moved from Franklin County to Adams County due to pretrial publicity.

Prosecutors say Draper beat Joseph Rinehart Jr., who died in April 2012 at a hospital in Franklin. An autopsy showed the boy died of head and internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma. It also showed the toddler had suffered a perforated bowel, as well as fractures to his skull, pelvis and ribs.

Investigators said Joseph's mother, Laura Rinehart, told police that when Joseph became ill and began vomiting, Draper tried to keep her from taking the boy to the hospital. She also said Draper told her that if she told police anything about what had happened to the boy, Draper would kill her.

Rinehart and Draper's wife, Nancy Draper, also face charges of intentional child abuse resulting in death. Nebraska State Patrol investigators said the two did nothing to stop the boy's abuse.

Nancy Draper is scheduled to stand trial June 17 in Phelps County. Rinehart's trial has not been scheduled.
