Ayotte meeting with NH veterans over budget cuts
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is meeting with leaders from veterans' service groups over cuts to military retiree benefits in a pending congressional budget.
In a letter to Senate colleagues, Ayotte, joined by fellow Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Roger Wicker of Mississippi, called for a bipartisan solution to replace the $6.3 billion in cuts.
The pending budget includes a provision that requires a 1 percent reduction in cost of living benefits for many military retirees under age 62. Ayotte's office says according to analysis by the Senate Budget and Armed Services Committees, under the proposal, a Sergeant First Class who retires in his early 40s could lose more than $70,000.
Ayotte is meeting with veterans at 11:45 a.m. Monday at the Merrimack VFW.
