RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The Sierra Safari Zoo in Reno is launching its annual food drive to raise money to feed its animals through the winter.
The zoo north of Reno closes in November for five months. During that period, operators say there's no revenue from visitors so it seeks donations to feed the animals until spring.
Co-founder Dale McDaniel says about $13,000 a month is needed to feed the 200 animals at the zoo, which is largely manned by volunteers.
The zoo is home to about 40 species of animals, including sloths, lemurs, wallabies, zebras and camels. It also has six kinds of monkeys and eight kinds of cats, including lions, tigers and leopards.
