A Long Island man is accused of leaving his dog with no food or water for more than 24 hours

CENTEREACH, N.Y. (AP) -- A Long Island man is accused of leaving his dog with no food or water for more than 24 hours.

The Suffolk County SPCA says Terral Ellis, of Centereach, faces animal cruelty charges for failure to provide proper sustenance to his pit bull.

The SPCA says the dog was dehydrated and covered in its own excrement.

It wasn't clear if Ellis had an attorney who could comment on the charges. He's due in court Aug. 25.

The animal was transported to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter.
