NEW YORK (AP) -- A deadline has been set for New York City to finally reach a deal on teacher evaluations.

State Education Department Commissioner John King said Wednesday there will be an evaluation system for city schools by June 1 if the city and the United Federation of Teachers can't resolve disputed issues.

Both the city and the union have until midnight Wednesday to enter online their 20-page proposals. Spokespeople for both parties have said they'll meet that deadline.

King says that next week the two sides will talk over the phone to identify their differences. If by May 29, the two parties can't resolve the disputed issues, King will conduct an expedited arbitration hearing. King says after the hearing he'll issue a final and binding evaluation plan by June 1.
