Police release details of pedestrian's death on Thruway

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (AP) -- State police have released more details of a weekend accident on the Thruway that claimed the life of a 18-year-old upstate New York woman.

Troopers say Mariah Surgick, of Schenectady, was a passenger in a car traveling west on Interstate 90 around 4 a.m. Saturday when the driver pulled over onto the right shoulder near Exit 25 in the town of Guilderland.

Police say Surgick got out of the vehicle and started walking across the highway when she was hit by a westbound tractor-trailer in the center lane. Troopers say she was pronounced dead at the scene by the Albany County coroner.

Investigators say Surgick and the woman driving the car had been arguing and Surgick was crossing the highway to call a cab at a rest stop.

The westbound lanes were shut down for several hours while police investigated. The investigation is continuing.

This story has been changed to correct the victim's age to 18 instead of 19.
