Pa. ambulance firm owner gets 7 3/4-year sentence | |||||
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A man who pleaded guilty to health care fraud and conspiracy has been sentenced to 7 3/4 years in prison in what federal authorities said was a $5.4 million Medicare scam. U.S. District Senior Judge John Padova also ordered 35-year-old William Hlushmanuk of Philadelphia on Tuesday to pay $5.4 million restitution. He pleaded guilty in February to health fraud and conspiracy to commit health fraud. Prosecutors alleged that the defendant used a straw owner to start Starcare Ambulance Bensalem because his criminal record made him ineligible to do so. They alleged that he conspired with others to defraud Medicare with bills for transporting kidney dialysis patients who had no medical need for ambulance service between 2006 and April 2011. © 2013 The Associated Press.
