District targets low-performing Philly schools for overhaul

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia School District is targeting nearly a dozen low-performing schools for overhaul next year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/2dFd50g ) the 11 schools will get some kind of major intervention next September, ranging from merging with an existing high-performing school to reopening with major staff or program changes. None of the schools will close or convert to charter.

Options for the schools also include operating under an evidence-based academic improvement plan, engaging a firm to manage the school on a contractual basis or restarting the school with significant staff or program shifts.

The schools were chosen on the basis of low performance for at least three years.

Parents, school communities and staff will have opportunities beginning next week to voice their opinions on school improvements.
