Authorities: Inmate strangled cellmate in fight over food

RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) -- A man has been charged with strangling his cellmate at a South Carolina prison during a fight over food.

The Department of Corrections said Wednesday that 34-year-old Michael Jerome Brice had been charged with murder in the July death of 24-year-old Ryan Mansfield.

Authorities say the men had been fighting over the theft of food. A warrant says Brice made a statement implicating himself in Mansfield's death.

Prisons records show Mansfield was serving a five-year sentence for burglary and grand larceny from Richland County. He was set to be released in March.

Brice started a 13-year sentence for drug and weapons charges in January. It wasn't known if he had an attorney on the murder charge.
