Man sentenced to 15 years in 1990 Memphis killing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Prosecutors in Tennessee say a man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison without parole in the 1990 shooting death of a Memphis liquor store owner.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich says in a news release that 61-year-old Stanley Owens was sentenced Wednesday in Shelby County Criminal Court in the fatal shooting of 47-year-old Edward Askew.

Owens was convicted of voluntary manslaughter last month.

Memphis police received a call three years ago from a federal prison inmate in Alabama who provided accurate details of the shooting that were never made public. He also identified Owens as the gunman in the holdup.

A witness identified Owens in a photo lineup and in court.
