Box office top 20: 'The Conjuring 2'


NEW YORK (AP) -- In a trio of debuts, the horror sequel "The Conjuring 2" bested the video-game adaptation "Warcraft" and the magic caper "Now You See Me 2" at the weekend box office.

"The Conjuring 2," James Wan's sequel to the 2013 paranormal thriller, opened with $40.4 million, according to final box-office figures Monday. That was roughly equal to the original's debut and easily trumped the weekend's other big openings.

While "Warcraft" has done record business in China, the big-budget but badly reviewed "World of Warcraft" adaptation wasn't much of a draw in North America, earning just $24.2 million.

"Now You See Me 2," in which illusionists use magic to carry out heists, opened with $22.4 million, about $7 million less than the 2013 debut of the original.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by comScore:
