RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- A New York man who argued that a seizure prevented him from being held criminally responsible in the beating death of his fiancee's 90-year-old grandmother has been convicted of her murder.

Newsday ( http://nwsdy.li/1vbuT0F ) reports that a judge found 24-year-old Robert Waters guilty Tuesday.

Police said Waters told them, "I'm responsible" after Florence Troiani's 2011 death in Centereach. Troiani suffered six broken bones and a rip in her heart during the beating.

Waters' fiancee had called 911 to say he was having a seizure and tearing violently through the house before the killing.

State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho notes that tests indicated Waters was susceptible to seizures but didn't show he had one that day.

Waters faces 25 years to life in prison. His lawyer says he'll appeal.
