US : Coup attempt in Turkey doesn't affect Taliban fight
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan tells The Associated Press that the attempted coup in Turkey has had no impact on the U.S.-led campaign to support Afghanistan in its war against the Taliban.
Gen. John Nicholson, commander of the international coalition that he said includes more than 500 Turkish soldiers, said in an interview Saturday that he is pleased with what he called the professionalism of senior Turkish military officers who supported the government against the coup leaders.
He said he believes the Turkish government is "going to be fine."
From October 2014 to February 2016, Nicholson commanded a NATO organization called Allied Land Command , based in the Turkish city of Izmir, so he knows many Turkish military officers.
