Coal ship engineer gets probation in dumping case
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The chief engineer of a Maltese-flagged coal ship has been sentenced to probation for charges related to the dumping of oily wastewater at sea.
The Virginian-Pilot reports ( http://bit.ly/18JdIfW ) that that 59-year-old Lambros Katsipis of Greece was sentenced Friday in Norfolk.
He was the chief engineer aboard the Antonis G. Pappadakis when Coast Guard investigators conducted a routine port inspection. The vessel was detained for more than five months.
Katsipi was convicted by a jury on seven of eight charges, including falsification of records and obstruction of justice. His year of probation begins with four months of community confinement.
The judge said how the convicted man's wife terminal illness may have affected his decisions weighed heavily in the sentencing.
