CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) -- The case against a man charged with shooting two women at a community college inside a Christiansburg mall is headed to a grand jury.

Media outlets report that 19-year-old Neil MacInnis waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Montgomery County General District Court.

MacInnis faces malicious wounding and weapons charges in the April 12 shooting at a satellite campus of New River Community College.

Part-time employee Taylor Sharpe and student Kristina Bousserghine were shot before the suspect was subdued by an off-duty security guard and Christiansburg police officers. The women are recovering from their injuries. Both attended Tuesday's hearing.

Neither woman appears to have been targeted, but they were in the lobby when the gunman entered the building, Christiansburg police spokeswoman Becky Wilburn has said.

Wilburn has said that authorities are pursuing the wounding charge because its maximum penalty of 20 years in prison is stiffer than the 10-year maximum for a charge of attempted murder.

MacInnis was a student at the college. He is being held at Western Virginia Regional Jail.
