Fatal Chesterfield police shooting ruled justified

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) -- A grand jury says the fatal shooting of a suspect by a Chesterfield County police officer was justified.

Chesterfield County police announced the grand jury's findings Wednesday.

Police tell media outlets that the officer shot 45-year-old Frankie Pitt of Richmond during a struggle on a parkway onramp on Jan. 13.

The officer thought Pitt was a disabled motorist and stopped to assist. He discovered that Pitt was a suspect in a robbery that occurred 10 minutes earlier.

Police say Pitt resisted arrest and struggled with the officer for his handgun.

The multijurisdictional grand jury met Tuesday to consider the shooting.

An internal investigation is continuing.
