Snapping turtle walks into elementary school

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- A snapping turtle arrived on the front steps of a Newport News elementary school just in time for class.

Daily Press reports ( ) that a 25- to 30-pound (11.3-kg to 13-kg) turtle was discovered in mud on the ramp to Riverside Elementary School a little before 8 a.m. on Thursday.

School spokeswoman Michelle Price says staff members found the turtle and contacted police. She says students weren't on campus yet.

Andy Lunsford, park operations superintendent for the city, says park rangers see snapping turtles out in the wild, but it's been a while since a snapping turtle has made its way into a school or shopping mall.

Senior Park Ranger Randy Creekmore says the turtle is healthy and was taken to Deer Park.
