Graduate pics at UVa will be unique this year: Rotunda dome will be copper colored

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- The University of Virginia's Rotunda dome will remain copper colored for final exercises because rain this week prevented crews from painting it.

Workers have spent the past year replacing the roof on the Rotunda. It's the first phase of a $50 million restoration project.

The dome was supposed to be painted white this week. University officials on Monday agreed not to try to paint the dome before the May 19 commencement.

Still, the roof work is several months ahead of schedule. The scaffolding that had been around the Rotunda for the past year has been taken down.
