Pierce County deputy cleared in shooting of man with knife

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- The Pierce County Prosecutor's Office has determined a deputy acted lawfully when he shot and killed a man armed with a butcher knife.

The News Tribune reported Tuesday that deputies on Sept. 21 had responded to a residence after receiving a call that Matthew Wells was trying to kill himself and might have been hearing voices.

The deputies found Wells shut in his bedroom and tried to convince him to put down the butcher knife and come out. Wells opened the door still armed with the knife and ignored orders to drop it.

He then moved toward the deputy, who fired his gun.

Tests showed Wells had methamphetamine and anti-anxiety medication in his system.
