Mallahan concedes Seattle mayor race; McGinn wins

SEATTLE (AP) -- T-Mobile executive Joe Mallahan has conceded defeat in the race to be Seattle's next mayor, handing environmental attorney Mike McGinn an unorthodox victory in the state's biggest city.

Mallahan conceded Monday after the latest batch of results from King County revealed McGinn had more than doubled his lead. After Monday's King County results, McGinn's lead was nearly 5,000 votes. Last Friday, he led Mallahan by 2,384 votes.

Mallahan says Seattle voters responded to McGinn's message, and that he'd be willing to work with McGinn in the future.

McGinn overcame Mallahan's bigger bank account and numerous endorsements, including from prominent politicians, such as Gov. Chris Gregoire, labor unions, and business organizations.

In the August primary, McGinn and Mallahan finished ahead of incumbent Mayor Greg Nickels.
