PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- A search for paw paws near Fort Boreman Historical Park has uncovered a rare artifact - a stone bearing the carved name of a Civil War soldier.
Civil War historians Brian Kesterson and Terry McVey found the stone on Oct. 26.
During the war, Fort Boreman was a Union encampment.
Kesterson says the inscription "A.P. Jones 1861" was carved into the stone, along with a soldier on a horse that indicated Jones was a member of a cavalry unit.
His research found that Jones served with Company A, 2nd W.Va. Calvary throughout the war.
He says artifacts signed by a soldier are rarely found in West Virginia.
