ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) -- Residents and fishermen are heading to Charleston in an attempt to overturn a water permit they say would harm the Shavers Fork River.
The groups, including the Shavers Fork Coalition and Mountaineer Chapter of Trout Unlimited, say the Department of Environment Protection permit to J.F. Allen would result in increased releases of iron and aluminum in the river.
Allen received the permit for its Pond Lick Mountain Quarry. Company officials say water releases under the permit wouldn't occur until next year at the earliest.
The groups say pollution limits in the permit are flawed and DEP didn't follow rules designed to protect the state's waterways.
The Environmental Quality Board is expected to hear arguments in the case on Thursday and Friday.
