W.Va. veterans groups try to lure younger vets

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's largest veterans group is planning a statewide effort this week to build its visibility and attract younger members.

Miles Epling, statewide adjutant of the American Legion, says state and national leaders plan to visit posts and participate in community events around the state.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars also is working to add younger veterans to its ranks. West Virginia VFW quartermaster Don Young says the organization is looking at ways to accommodate younger members and their families.

The VFW's membership in West Virginia has fallen from about 30,000 in the early 1990s to 17,500.

Epling says the American Legion has seen a slight drop over the past two years, and now has 24,500 members.
