Delegate Tracker
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney became the Republican party's presidential nominee by crossing the threshold of 1,144 delegates to the GOP national convention this summer. Most delegates are awarded through state primaries and caucuses. Other delegates, mostly members of the Republican National Committee, are free to endorse any candidate they choose at any time, even before a primary. The Associated Press includes such delegates in its tally once they declare a candidate preference.
No major candidate is challenging President Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination, so Democratic delegates are not being tracked.
