For 80 years it was illegal to grow hemp. Now an effort to grow the economy by using hemp is taking root in Hazleton.

A nonprofit is conducting research on the plant, preparing to grow hemp on minelands, coordinating with manufacturers that want to use hemp and training local students for science-based careers.
