Forgotten Country Star Makes a Comeback

After a decades-long reign as the grand showman of country music, Porter Wagoner thought his career had dried up. But he began a slow comeback in 2004 with a series of gospel records. Soon, he and Marty Stuart, a fellow Grand Ole Opry member with an appreciation for country's past, were plotting an album. Then came the kicker: An invitation from the White Stripes to open their sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. On the eve of his 80th birthday, Wagoner is suddenly and improbably hip again.
