Harlem Culture Clash

Harlem, long considered the heart of black culture in America, is in the midst of a real-estate boom. Its opulent brownstones and churches from the 19th century's Gilded Age are drawing middle-class professionals whose pockets aren't quite deep enough for the rest of Manhattan, where the average apartment goes for more than $1 million. But longtime Harlem residents say "new Harlemites" are making changes that are destroying some of what's dearest to the black community.
